Arco da Rua Augusta - Lisbon

Arco da Rua Augusta

The Viewpoint provides a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view over the historic centre of Lisbon and Tejo. The river, the Lisbon Cathedral, the Castle of São Jorge, the Rossio and the ruins of the Convento do Carmo are some of the symbols of the city that can be seen from here. The elevator only goes up to the second floor, to find the machinery of the arc clock and the history of the monument. You need to climb a flight of stairs (narrow and snail-shaped) to reach the viewpoint.
The arch of Augusta arose in 1759 but was only completed in 1875. In the arch, the statues of Viriato, Vasco da Gama, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira and Marquês de Pombal stand out. Next to it are the representations of the rivers Douro and Tejo and, above, the stone of arms of Portugal. The visitor can also get to know some of the histories of the Augusta Street Arch, from the beginning of the construction to its conclusion, through the exhibition that can be seen in the Clock Room.
