Pastéis de Belém

This one is for you, Sweet Tooth.

Pastéis de Nata are a world-famous Portuguese brand and people just love those happy golden eggy custard tarts.

They are better known as Pastéis de Belém as their original recipe - the Best Kept Secret in Lisbon - was created in the 18th century by a monk at the Jerónimos Monastery - Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Rumour has it that the monk later sold the secret recipe to the owners of the Pastry Shop in Belém and the sweet tarts became a success story, currently selling over 20,000 cakes a day which are worth waiting for (go early to avoid queues). And yes, the recipe remains secret!
